Ambien (zolpidem) is a sedative-hypnotic medication primarily used for the short-term treatment of insomnia in adults.   Its specific indications depend on the formulation:

• Immediate-release Ambien is indicated to help patients fall asleep faster (treat sleep onset insomnia) and is typically used for short periods, often up to 35 days. 

• Ambien CR (controlled-release) is indicated to help patients fall asleep and stay asleep, addressing both sleep onset and sleep maintenance issues. 

Clinical guidelines generally recommend using Ambien only after non-pharmacological treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and sleep hygiene improvements, have been attempted. It is not approved for use in children under 18 years of age.
